Chongqing, an inland city, is located in the subtropical zone of north hemisphere, with mountains on the north and southeast. It has a humid mid-subtropical monsoon climate. Chongqing is also called one of the three "Furnace Cities" along the Yangtze River, with hot summer and warm winter and long frost-free period.

The climate of Chongqing is featured by: (1) Long frost-free period, hot summer and warm winter. January is the coolest month with average tem-perature of 7.8 C. Chongqing has the longest frost-free period in the area of the same latitudes, which lasts 340-350 days, with active accumulated tem-perature (> 0 C) being 6.000--6900 C. (2) Abundant but unevenly distributed precipitation. There are downpours, but under the influence of the Tibetan high and the subtropical high, drought usually occurs for 30-50 days in July and August. (3) Overcast and rainy autumn, cloudy and foggy winter, low sunshine exposure. Chongqing is also called "the City of Fog". (4) Distinct vertical dis-tribution of climate. With the influence of topography, there are generally two inversion layers at the height of 500-600 meter and 800 meter. Precipitation increases with higher elevations.
