Located on the south side of the Qiongzhou channel and the northern end of Hainan Island, Haikou has a tropical oceanic climate, featured by distinct tropical landscape. Spring is warm, rainless and dry; summer is hot and rainy; autumn has typhoons and rainstorms; and it is not cold in winter except for short time chilly weather when there is cold airflow. In March, the monthly av-erage temperature is above 20 C, warm and comfortable. From April to Octo-ber, the temperatures keep at a relatively high level, with monthly average of above 25 C, but the extreme high is still below 39 C. In winter (Dec.-Feb.), the monthly average temperatures are all around 18 C. But a minimum of 5 C is possible under the influence of strong cold air, causing damages to tropical crops. Tropical storm and typhoon occur during April to October each year, mainly in August and September. The wet season is from May to October, with September being the wettest month, which has a monthly average of about 250 mm.
