Lhasa on the Tibetan Plateau has a temperate semiarid monsoon climate. It is also known as the "City of Sunshine", with annual sunshine up to 3,000 hours, which is 1,800 hours more than that of Chengdu, capital of the neighboring Sichuan Province, and 1,100 hours more than that of Shanghai, the biggest city in China. With an elevation of 3,650 meters, Lhasa has thin air, low temperatures and large temperature variance between day and night. The extreme high temperature is below 30 C while the extreme low can be under -16 C. It is dry in winter and spring with haunting high winds. The frost-free season is just about 100-120 days. The annual precipitation is 200 to 500 mm, most of which is accumulated from June to September, and mainly at night. Comparatively, it is warm and humid from March to October, which is the best time for tourism.
