Wuhan, located on the east of the Jianghan Plain and at the junction where the Han River joins the Yangtze River, has a humid subtropical mon-soon climate. There are abundant rainfall and sunshine as well as four distinct seasons. The climate of Wuhan changes a lot within a year. Summer begins from the second decade of May. Midsummer starts in July. The maximum tem-perature during this time mostly stays at 37-39 C; yet the minimum is still high, generally at 29-39 C. With high humidity at the same time, it is uncomfortably sultry. Autumn starts after October, with temperature gradually declining and the air becoming dry. The average temperature is 20-25 C, but sometimes it may reach 30 C or above. It is quick to get into winter from autumn as long as there is cold air coming from the north, leading to rapid fall of temperature. Winter begins at the end of December and runs through next February, with temperature averaging 1-3 C. When there is fine weather, temperature can be as high as 7-8 C; but when there is cold wave or sleet, temperature is usually below the freezing point. Spring is back after March with rapid rise of tem-perature, even to a maximum above 20 C. Yet, there might be an unusually cold spell in March and April, with temperature falling 15-20 C overnight and snow drifting about.
