Xining, in the east of the Tibetan Plateau and with an average elevation of 2,275 meters in the urban area, has a continental plateau semiarid climate. The annual average temperature is about 6 C. As Xining is in the warm sector of Huangshui River valley and less affected by the cold air, it is not severely cold in winter, and the average temperature in January is about -7 C. Meanwhile, it is not hot in summer. The monthly average temperatures from June to August are just in the 15 - 17 C range, and average highs are still below 25 C. As an ideal summer resort, Xining has a reputation for being called the "Summer City". Precipitation in summer accounts for 70% of the year total of about 370 mm.
